A Place Where Craftsmanship and Nature Meet

In a peaceful corner of the Scotney Castle Estate in Kent, the Furniture Craft School teaches the timeless art of fine furniture making. Surrounded by ancient woodland, the school is dedicated to craftsmanship, precision and purpose – values deeply shared with their trusted timber supplier, us here at English Woodlands Timber.
At the heart of their philosophy is a simple belief: fine furniture begins with exceptional timber.
For several years, students have travelled to English Woodlands Timber in Sussex to hand-select the boards that will become their next heirloom piece. Each visit connects students to the source of their materials. It also shows how sustainably managed British hardwoods form the foundation of every great piece of furniture.
A Timber Supplier You Can Trust
At English Woodlands Timber, we’re proud to be the trusted timber supplier for the Furniture Craft School. For years, the school has sourced oak, ash, cedar, and other beautiful British hardwoods directly from our yard in Sussex. We share their belief that every fine furniture project should begin with timber of provenance and integrity.
By visiting us to handpick their boards, Furniture Craft School students experience first-hand how responsibly sourced timber can inspire creativity and craftsmanship. It’s a partnership that connects woodland to workshop – helping new makers understand where their materials come from and why that matters.
Seeing our sustainably sourced hardwoods transformed into meaningful, lasting furniture pieces is always rewarding. It reminds us that the care we take in sourcing and grading timber directly supports the next generation of skilled furniture makers.
As the team at Furniture Craft School put it: “English Woodlands Timber provides the vital link between woodland and workshop. Their sustainably sourced timber underpins every student project we undertake.”
Craft, Technique and Purpose
The Furniture Craft School’s 38-week full-time programme and one-week short courses teach a mix of traditional furniture-making techniques and modern methods. Students learn to make heirloom-quality furniture step by step, progressing through increasingly complex projects.
Projects range from hand-cut dovetail boxes to Shaker-style tables and Krenov-inspired cabinets. Each project helps students understand design, joinery, and the unique qualities of different timbers.
By working with Oak, Ash, and Cedar , students gain hands-on experience with British hardwoods. They learn to read the grain, respond to its movement, and celebrate its natural variation.
From Beginners to Professional Makers
Students come from all walks of life – graduates seeking practical skills, professionals changing direction, and retirees pursuing a lifelong dream to make.
What unites them is a shared drive to make with purpose. Many graduates go on to establish their own studios, join leading British makers, or pursue conservation joinery. As a result, they carry forward the principles of fine British furniture making.
Every finished piece, whether a cabinet, chair or box is a testament to skill, patience and sustainable sourcing.
A Partnership Rooted in Sustainability
Sustainability sits at the core of the relationship between the Furniture Craft School and English Woodlands Timber.
As a leading timber supplier in the South East, English Woodlands Timber works with responsibly managed British and European woodlands. This ensures every board supports forest health and the future of craft industries.
For students, that means learning with confidence knowing the materials they use are ethically sourced and environmentally responsible. For the wider community, it means every piece of furniture made at the school tells a story of care, craft and conservation.
It’s a partnership built on shared values: craftsmanship, sustainability, and the belief that making something well still matters.
