Fresh sawn timber has long been a defining feature of the English architectural landscape, appearing in everything from single beams and lintels to full green oak frames.

Timber-framed buildings are a beautiful, popular, economical, sustainable and speedy method of construction for homes, garages, barns and garden buildings.

Fresh sawn (green) Oak beams, along with Douglas Fir timber sections for building timber frames, are available as custom orders, cut to size to your dimensions. These are used as beams, posts, curves, crucks and bracing for traditional heavy timber frame building, for glulam or gridshell construction methods.

Our yard holds a regular stock of green Oak beams in standard(ish) sizes to satisfy fast-turnaround requirements. We try to keep fresh sawn timber in a variety of sizes in the hope that we’ll have close to what you’ll need when you’re in a tight spot.

Every beam is measured, tagged and listed by grade, making it easy for you to choose the right timber for your build.

If you’re not in a hurry for your green Oak, then ordering your timber as a custom cutting list is the easiest way to buy your structural timber beams. Just give us a list of components – Qty x Th x W x L – and that list will be cut to your specification and delivered to our yard or your site.

Availability of Fresh Sawn Timber Beams

From the time of order to collection from our yard, from species to species, as follows:

Oak: 7 – 10 working days

A lorry of green Oak beams arrives at our yard most Mondays, but cut-to-order requirements are every two weeks. We close the order list each Wednesday morning to give the sawmill time to cut and load everything for the following week’s Friday dispatch. If you don’t have your precise cutting list ready but know roughly how much Oak you’ll need, you can reserve a volume on an incoming load that aligns with your build schedule, then finalise your requirements before the Wednesday cut-off.

Douglas Fir: 10 -14 working days

Our Douglas Fir is milled locally by a two-person team who fell the trees, process the logs on a portable bandsaw in the forest, and hand-load and transport the timber to us. It’s demanding work, but carried out with real dedication. We choose to source locally from responsibly managed woodlands, supporting sustainable forestry practices – something we hope you’ll appreciate, even if it adds a few extra days to lead times. Our planet will love you for it.

Structural Chestnut can be supplied in the round from coppice sources, as well as regular cut sections, for the more recent revival in round timber framing for ecological building works.
