Meet Ornate Interiors…
Who are they, and what do they do?
Ornate Interiors was founded over twenty years ago, and they’re still combining technical knowledge and creativity, manufacturing and installing decorative plasterwork for interiors and exteriors, conserving and restoring historic plasterwork, along with a range of expert services. Thanks to their team of industry specialists, Ornate Interiors have earned an enviable reputation for consistently delivering high quality and effective plastering solutions.
Ornate Interiors strive to provide their clients with an exceptionally professional, honest and knowledgeable service, prioritising the needs of their customers – and the needs of the buildings they work on. Regardless of the complexity of the project, they approach every job with passion, creativity and courage, seeking out innovative solutions and raising the bar.
The on site, purpose-made workshop has been in development for thirty years, and is still expanding. The area allows the Ornate Interiors team to create products of the highest quality, from intricate, complex plaster mouldings, to large feature ceilings. The team often invites customers into the workshop, where they demonstrate the skills that have barely changed over the centuries. The space features a large drying facility, and storage for their archives of mouldings produced over the years.
Ornate Interiors believe that the success of the industry depends on the development of young people looking for a career in plastering, and they are tackling the skills gap through their Apprenticeship Programme, training enthusiastic and talented young plastering specialists and bringing them into the core team.
Ornate Interiors have worked on hundreds of the nation’s prized historic buildings, including theatres such as the Hammersmith Apollo, Stockport Plaza and Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre.
Whilst raising awareness of the duty of care that managers of historic buildings have to ensure all suspended ceilings are inspected and certified at least every five years, Ornate Interiors discovered that The Grand Theatre in Leeds had a problem. A state-of-the-art automated flying system had been installed to allow the theatre to meet the production requirements of major West End musicals and plays – but the walkways had been directly supported on the ceiling structure, weakening it.
The solution was to remove the old walkways and replace them with a form of support that shifted the load from the ceiling itself. New metal channels were installed behind the ceiling, and wire supports were attached.
As Alan Dawson, Head of Technical and Property for The Grand Theatre, revealed: “We have been working with Ornate Interiors for several years in maintaining and preserving our 140 year old ornate plaster ceiling. Ornate Interiors also inspect all other ceilings in public areas and work with us around our busy programme. The confidence and service we receive from Ronnie and his team in maintaining this Historic Grade II listed building is second to none.”
As much as plastering is their art Ornate Interiors also understand the necessity for the right lath product to base their traditional lime paster work on. Our specialist supply of hand riven chestnut laths form the structure for many ceiling and wall restoration projects. The laths are sourced from local coppiced woodland sustainably managed to provide biodiverse healthy woodlands whilst maintaining the constant 4 year cyclical cutting program ideal for splitting and lath making.
