Following early conversations on a separate restoration site, Fallen Oak Frames were commissioned to design and erect a traditionally styled oak threshing barn under permitted development. From the outset, the brief focused on creating an authentic agricultural building rooted in traditional craftsmanship.
The brief focused on function. The building needed to serve the adjacent farmhouse and surrounding fields. It would provide storage for agricultural machinery, vehicles and occasional family use. Although future conversion was discussed, the client soon refocused on craftsmanship, proportion and traditional joinery.
Engineering and Structural Approach
The team worked closely with structural engineers experienced in post-and-beam carpentry. This ensured traditional jointing details were retained throughout the frame. It also helped avoid unnecessary over-specification of timber sizes.
Minor changes were made to the arcade plates and purlins to meet structural requirements. These adjustments maintained the integrity of the design while ensuring long-term performance.
Timber Supply and Quality
We supplied a range of high-quality air-dried Oak, including feather edge and bespoke door components. The timber was an excellent example of QPA grade, with beams that were notably straight and free from twist – ideal for a traditionally framed structure of this kind.

Fabrication and Setting Out
Fabrication began with the arcade and aisle wall frames, following a traditional sequence. Clear ink lines, rotation marks and reference points were applied to each beam. This created a three-dimensional setting-out grid that ensured accuracy in every orientation.
Datum lines were clearly defined within the production drawings. This reduced repeat calculations and helped minimise the risk of error. The approach proved especially effective on a frame of this size and repetition.
Site Erection and Installation
After ten weeks of fabrication, the frame was prepared for transport. Components were stacked in lifting order to streamline the crane day and reduce on-site handling.
The team installed the perimeter walls first using manual handling and mechanical lifts. This allowed time to accurately set out sole plates and staddle stones before heavy equipment arrived.
A 25-tonne crane was used to lift the main structural elements into place. The arcade posts, wall plates and pre-assembled trusses were installed smoothly, despite challenging weather conditions.
Project Outcome
As the trusses were set, the structure quickly took shape. Months of planning and careful craftsmanship became visible on site. The result was a traditional oak frame that reflected both historic practice and modern precision.
